ACT results were released Wednesday morning, showing Tennessee held flat compared to 2014. While national figures are also steady, the average score across the country is more than a full point higher than in Tennessee.

Tennessee students who took the ACT college entrance exam this year averaged a composite score of 19.8. That’s on par with last year, but still a high point over the last five years.

According to numbers released Wednesday morning, Tennessee fares well compared to other southern states that also require 100 percent of students to take the ACT. Only Kentucky has a higher average composite score with a 20.

Looking at specific subjects, Tennessee students improved in science and ticked down in English, mirroring a trend the state has seen on its own year-end testing.

The percentage of students deemed “college ready” moved up slightly to 20 percent or one in five. But if private school students are removed, that figure drops to just one in six — well behind the national college-readiness figure of 28 percent.

In 2015, 56 Tennessee students achieved the top score of 36.
