Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

If not, it could be the reason your waistline is growing.

Consider this, adequate sleep hours range from 6-9 hours. If you’re feeling sluggish or groggy it could be that you need a little more shut eye. Getting an adequate amount of sleep is important as it sets the tone of your day. If you don’t have a good night’s sleep, you’re more likely to make unhealthy eating choices throughout the day. Being overweight or obese is usually connected to improper sleep habits. A study by UC Berkley, found a link between sleep deprivation and food cravings. Researchers found that sleepless nights lead individuals to reach for junk food like pizza and doughnuts over whole grains and leafy green vegetables.

They found that certain decision-making brain regions became blunted by a lack of sleep whereas desires were amplified, thus making unhealthy nutrition choices possible.

To ensure a good night’s sleep and smaller waistline, keep the following tips in mind.

  • Avoid working out 2 hours before bed time
  • Remove all electronics from the bedroom.
  • Make sure your room has very little light.
  • Keep your room at a cool temperature.

Happy sleeping. I’m Erica Freeman with the Church Health Center.
