A Balanced Diet for Healthier Eating

When you sit down for a meal or snack, do you ever think about what you’re getting nutrition-wise?

Ideally, you want every meal and snack to contain a protein, fat and carb. By doing this, you will get a lot of nutrients and feel satisfied.

Does this sound like a lot of work? It’s possible that you may already be following this principle.

If for breakfast you have a bowl of low sugar-cereal with one percent milk, you are fulfilling your protein, fat and carb requirement.

For a snack if you have a serving of low-sugar yogurt, you are getting a protein fat and carb all-in-one, just as you would with a serving size amount of crackers with peanut butter.

It’s simple really.

Just try to avoid a meal of only carbs or only protein. Do your best to combine all nutrients when possible.

Restricting diets that require you to eat from mainly one food group doesn’t teach you anything. And, more than likely it’s so restricting that you can’t continue it for a lifetime. And once you get off of the diet and haven’t learned healthy eating habits, you will more than likely fall back to unhealthy habits.

Remember, everything in moderation and make it a point to eat from all food groups and nutrients. I’m Erica Walters with the Church Health Center.
