The City of Memphis, Exposed!

New Memphis

No, we're not talking about a scandal. It's just the first day of September, known in these parts as "901 Day." And that means celebrating all things Memphis.

One organization getting into the spirit of things is New Memphis, formerly the Leadership Academy. Its annual event called Exposure on 901 Day is from 6 to 8  tonight at AutoZone Park.

Created as a way to introduce newcomers to the city's cultural and business offerings, the party (with music, food, a celebrity kickball game, and 150 local organizations set up to answer questions) quickly became a way for locals to learn more about their own city.

The Humane Society is among the 150 organizations sharing information on Exposure on 901 Day at AutoZone Park.

Speaking with WKNO, Anna Mullins, Vice President of Communications at New Memphis, says "you can basically wander around and find opportunities that you may be intentionally looking for or may just stumble across and be like 'wow, I had no idea we had a roller derby here in Memphis. That sounds like fun!'"

Reporting from the gates of Graceland to the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, Christopher has covered Memphis news, arts, culture and politics for more than 20 years in print and on the radio. He is currently WKNO's News Director and Senior Producer at the University of Memphis' Institute for Public Service Reporting. Join his conversations about the Memphis arts scene on the WKNO Culture Desk Facebook page.
