Food writer Jennifer Biggs discovers more than 50 independently-owned restaurants and specialty food stores hiding along Germantown Parkway. But where to start eating?
In her "Eat the Street" series for the Commercial Appeal, Biggs previously snacked her way down Summer Avenue. This time, she took on an 8-mile stretch of road best known for chain restaurants and big retail stores.
She talked with us about the project and some of her best finds. The biggest surprise? The diversity. There are foods represented from many different countries: Columbia, Brazil, Ethiopia, Thailand…
One of her favorite discoveries was the aptly named "Ethiopian Restaurant" in Cordova. She recommends the "coffee ceremony."
Her description: "Here raw beans are roasted in a small skillet, the smoke is waved over you, beans are ground and steeped in a clay pot. When it's ready, coffee is poured and incense is lit. Relax. The world can wait."
