Doing Good for Mardi Gras

The Kitchen Community

Happy Mardi Gras!

Since today happens to be Fat Tuesday … I thought it the perfect time to talk about a Mardi Gras themed event that is coming up this weekend.

Lisa Ellis, Regional Director of The Kitchen Community in Memphis, stopped by to tell us about the event … and enlighten us on The Kitchen Community.

“The Garden Gala is our inaugural event.  A fundraiser to help us raise funds to support our work in Memphis schools. The theme is Mardi Gras Masquerade and we are going to have great dinner, lots of cocktails, and a fun live auction.”

On Saturday night, The Kitchen Community has planned a fun evening out at the FedEx Event Center at Shelby Farms Park.  Chefs from The Majestic Grille, Char, Interim, and The Kitchen Bistro will be cooking up a New Orleans-inspired feast to support this non-profit’s endeavors in our hometown.

So what exactly is The Kitchen Community?

“At The Kitchen Community, we strengthen communities by accelerating the real food movement at scale … and we do that by putting edible gardens in schools that we call learning gardens.”

“In Memphis, we have 76 learning gardens and they are in Jubilee, ASD and Shelby County schools.”

That’s nearly 18,000 students each year that are touched by this program here locally!

And The Kitchen Community is making a difference across the country …

“We have over 350 gardens in six cities: Denver, Los Angeles, Chicago, Memphis, Indianapolis, and Pittsburgh.”

Connecting kids to real food and empowering them to make healthier food choices is what this organization and event are all about.
