The Economics of Eating Healthy

Proper nutrition does add up to good health, but can also add up financially.

We know that eating a variety of fresh produce and avoid processed foods are the basic concepts for a healthy living.  With a little bit of planning, healthy eating can fit into any budget. Here are some tips to help you stay on track with your nutrition and your budget.

  • Freeze it- Consider freezing fresh fruits and vegetables before they ruin. Celery, onions, and bell peppers can easily be added to stir fry dishes and soups.
  • Consider whole grains and beans- These food items are packed with essential fiber and nutrients and are relatively inexpensive.
  • Shop sales- Create your meal plan from the weekly specials offered at your local grocery store. Since frozen fruits and vegetables are an excellent choice for both their nutritional and cost value, stock up on the buy 10 for $10 sale. This also saves prep time in the kitchen.
  • Be organized- Put thought into how you store and organize the food in your refrigerator. If you cannot see it or if the food item is not prepared, you will not eat it. One meal per week, use items you have stored in your freezer.
  • Try ethnic markets- They have unique food items at low cost. It also my give you some creative ideas for meals.
  • Shop farmer’s market at the end of the day- Most likely farmers will offer special deals and sometimes they throw in an extra item or two. Shopping local, you get food that is pack with nutrients and vitamins.
  • Repurpose leftovers- Make roasted chicken one night, then use the meat for sandwiches, soups or stir fries the next.
