In a statement, Rome said those who have held the position before him have left a strong legacy of leadership, upon which he’s ready to build.

“Our nation’s [Historically Black Colleges and Universities] are facing an interesting chapter in history, and I am certain Fisk will see its story of academic excellence, diversity, and integrity expand over the next 150 years,” he said in a statement. “It will be my pleasure to work alongside the entire Fisk University family as we continue to cultivate scholars and leaders one by one.”

Rome will replace the school’s interim president, who stepped in after James Williams resigned in 2015, three years into his term. At the time, the chair ofFisk’sboard told The TennesseanWilliams’ departure came over some differences of opinions with the school, and was  “more or less mutual.”
