In the heat of exercise

Keeping physically fit is important to your health and you have enjoyed walking in the beautiful spring weather.

Now that it is summer, keeping uwith your exercise goals can be more challenging.

Hot weather can take a toll on our bodies, especially if we are active.

Our bodies naturally cool by sweating, but during extremely high temperatures, sweating may not be enough and our bodies are stressed. This can lead to heat related illness. Most heat related illness is due to prolonged exposure to the heat, even if we are gardening.

Symptoms of heat related illness include dizziness, weakness, fatigue, cramps, nausea and vomiting, and muscle cramps.

Here are some simple guidelines to keep you safe during your summer activity.
* Give your body time to adjust to the change in climate. It takes a few weeks to get used to the additional heat and humidity. Take it slow for a while.
* Hydrate before, during and after exercise. Drink a bottle of water prior to exercise and then take sips during your activity. Your water bottle is your best friend especially during the summer!
* Don’t get stranded! Know your route and if there is shade available. Try to avoid activity during the middle of the day when the heat and humidity is at its highest.
* Wear layers of lose fitting clothing.
* Be mindful of your medications. Certain medications may increase the impact of heat related illness.

Consult with your physician or pharmacist.
