Helping Friends and Family Become Healthier

Church Health Center

Trying to help a friend or family member improve their health can be challenging. It can make a relationship stronger or lead to resentment.

First, ask yourself: why do I want to help this person? If the first thought that comes to mind is their looks, then stop it. Vanity is the wrong motive to do anything. Looks fade, but health remains.

A better reason to help a family member or friend accomplish a wellness goal is by wanting to improve their health. You don’t want them to be in pain every day they wake up. You want them to live a high quality life filled with joy. And, you want them to be around to share more happy experiences with the people they love.

How can you help? Consider offering to walk or workout with them at their pace and comfort level.

Be there to take any health education or cooking classes with them. Listen to their struggles and don’t judge.

Try to be uplifting and encouraging. There will be good days and bad days. Make them aware that living a healthy lifestyle isn’t a one-and-done deal. It takes time and consistent work.

By being supportive and caring, you will be a great motivator. I’m Erica Walters with the Church Health Center.
