A Homeless Poet Gives Thanks

Christopher Blank

A poem from the streets of Memphis asks us to think about the plights of others and to give thanks for our blessings.

A few days ago, we brought you a story about The Bridge, a local newspaper that has, since its debut last March, been helping the homeless in different ways. First, homeless vendors can sell the papers. But second, they can also write for it.

Thaddeus "Theddy" Wilkes started writing poetry about a year ago. A friend in the homeless shelter encouraged him to submit his work to the paper. We here at WKNO thought that one of his poems was particularly appropriate for a holiday dedicated to giving thanks and counting blessings.

We also think you should hear it! Click the link above.

Reporting from the gates of Graceland to the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, Christopher has covered Memphis news, arts, culture and politics for more than 20 years in print and on the radio. He is currently WKNO's News Director and Senior Producer at the University of Memphis' Institute for Public Service Reporting.
