A Hot (Cold) Summer Pickup

City and State

Cold Brew Coffee is the new “it” item on coffee shop menus across the country.

To find out all about cold brew coffee, I stopped by City & State on Broad Avenue to get the inside scoop from owner Lisa Toro.

“Cold brew is a method of brewing coffee that actually utilizes cold water and you steep it for a period of time usually around 12 to 24 hours which is different from ice coffee which you brew with hot water and then you serve over ice and chill.”

“Cold brew has a minimal amount of acidity to it. It’s also very easy to brew at home. It does contain a pretty high content of caffeine and you can also batch it and keep it up to 2 weeks as an easy grab and go.”

How do you make it?

“So you want to use a 1 to 8 coffee to water ratio. Put that in a mason jar, a pitcher, a French press, coarse grind texture of a breadcrumb. Let that sit 12 to 24 hours either on the counter or in the refrigerator.”

What types of coffee work best?

“You can really use any coffee that you enjoy, that can be a dark roast, a lighter roast. It’s something to play around with and really have fun.”

Cold brew coffee is almost like a concentrate, so you definitely will want to dilute it. Lisa had some great suggestions that they use at City & State.

“When you make your cold brew, you can use flat water or have a little bit more fun with it. You can try macadamia milk, rice milk, we also enjoy adding sparkling water to that.”
