Interview with Eric Foner

Eric Foner, DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University is one of this country's most prominent historians.

Few have written as extensively about Mid-19th Century America as Dr. Foner, and, perhaps, none has shaped how the professoriate has come to understand this period.

Foner's most recent work is The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery, for which he has received the Pulitzer Prize, the Bancroft Prize, and the Lincoln Prize.

A century-and-a-half ago, in the midst of the Civil War, President Lincoln was ambling towards the Emancipation Proclamation. In commemoration of that event, Foner talks with host Jonathan Judaken about Lincoln, race, and slavery.

My mother introduced me to WKNO-FM and public radio long before I can remember. I suppose the first thing I really recall about WKNO-FM is that every afternoon, when my mother picked me up from school, the radio was tuned-in to The World, then All Things Considered, probably beginning around age 8. The way these reporters and hosts took you from the comfort of your mom's van to wherever in the world they were reporting from absolutely fascinated me. From then on, I was officially hooked.
