Local, artisanal...soda?

Memfizz

Ok, we all know how good Memphis water is to drink on its own … and for making delicious local beers.

But did you know some folks are now using our famous water to make a refreshing twist on soda?

I sat down with Steve Cantor and Evan Katz with Memfizz to talk about this libation that just hit Memphis grocery shelves this past month.

Steve is the founder of this new product. “Memfizz is a probiotic beverage. It’s a natural soda that we make right here in Memphis and it’s good for you.”

Evan chimed in with a bit of explanation of this “Water Kefir” naturally fizzy soda. “Memfizz is made through a natural probiotic fermentation process which gives it it’s natural carbonation but it also gives it the same health benefits and probiotic benefits you would find in yogurt or kombucha or other probiotic things so its really great for digestion or if you have been on antibiotics.”

“We source the ingredients of Memfizz locally as best we can. Certainly Memphis water which is from the aquipher here and it’s is pure and good as you can get.” In addition to the water, the ingredients are an all-organic mixture of lemons, figs, and other fruits added for flavoring. And for the fizz, each batch is infused with the same living, probiotic culture that they like to call "The Mama."

So what does this soda taste like? “Memfizz kinda tastes like fizzy lemonade and has the same fizz as a Sprite or soda but it’s not going to make your stomach hurt afterwards.”

Memfizz is currently available in Lemon, Cranberry, and Ginger flavors and is available at Miss Cordelia’s, The Curb Market, and Otherland’s Coffee Bar.

This is Jennifer Chandler with The Weekly Dish. Cheers!
