Memphis, TN – Four water-bearing layers of sand and gravel are situated from 50 to 2600 feet below ground, known as the artesian wells. Memphis gets its water mainly from the 500-foot sand layer of the Memphis sand aquifer, which is estimated to hold around one trillion gallons of water. The first well was drilled in 1887. Since then, Memphis has become well-known for having excellent drinking water.
