Memphis' Newest "Old" Distillery

Old Dominick Distillery

Have you seen the giant rooster sign over a renovated warehouse down on Front Street?

There is no mistaking which building is the new home to Old Dominick Distillery!

Opened by cousins Chris Canale Jr. and Alex Canale, Old Dominick just hosted their grand opening celebration.  I sat down with Alex to learn more about their distillery

“Our great, great grandfather Dominico Canale started the D. Canale Company in 1866. One of his premier products was the Old Dominick Memphis Toddy and line of whiskeys. Four years ago we decided to bring back that brand, after prohibition had ended it, and we are very proud to be back in downtown Memphis to support the brand and the community in itself.”

The cousins pulled out all the stops when renovating the warehouse that now is home to Old Dominick. The building includes the working distillery, tasting rooms, event space, and an outdoor patio.

“We decided to put the distillery in the Heart of Memphis which is Downtown. We do tours everyday expect for Tuesdays. Tours take about 40 minutes. You get to taste our fine products at the end and experience a true destination.”

Alex and his cousin Chris are producing a full line of spirits.

“While we are aging our TN whiskey on the shelves today, you can find our proud Memphis vodka, our honey bell citrus vodka, and our Memphis Toddy.”

And what exactly is a Toddy?

“The Memphis toddy is a high rye bourbon-based whiskey that we steep overnight with cinnamon, clove, coriander, black pepper, lemon peel, orange peel. The following day we introduce sugar and grapefruit to it to round out this roller coaster of a whiskey.”
