Opening Panel Round

PETER SAGAL, HOST:

We want to remind everybody that they can join us here most weeks at the Chase Bank Auditorium in downtown Chicago. For tickets to our shows and more information, you can go to wbez.org and you can also find a link at our website, which is waitwait.npr.org.

OK, panel, time for you, of course, to answer some questions about this week's news. Luke, there's a lot of tension between Greece and Germany. it's Germany that holds most of the debt that Greece can't pay. German Chancellor Angela Merkel handled a stressful situation in Greece this week when what happened?

LUKE BURBANK: Someone borrowed her David Hasselhoff CD and didn't bring it back to her.

SAGAL: No.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

BURBANK: I think actually it was when the waiter spilled a tray of beers down her back.

SAGAL: That's exactly what happened, five glass of beer. It's on YouTube. It's great.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

SAGAL: Walking by, splash, right down Angela Merkel's back. She was at a meeting for the Christian Democratic Union. They apparently like to party.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: The waiter spilled the tray of five beers down her back. Being German, she immediately whipped off her suit jacket and started to wring the beer into her mouth.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: Actually, it was amazing - this is true - how well she handled it, with real grace and aplomb, she didn't angry. Almost as if, you know, this happened all the time.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: Or maybe she was just happy something had finally washed the feeling of George W. Bush's hands off her shoulders.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

BURBANK: It's actually such a sad story for the guy who was bringing the beer, because he wasn't even supposed to be the person who brought the beer to her. Somebody else was supposed to do it and they got too nervous.

SAGAL: Really?

BURBANK: This is a true story.

SAGAL: And he's like, no problem, I can handle this.

BURBANK: Yes, exactly. And then he's standing there and it isn't even his fault.

ROXANNE ROBERTS: Somebody bumped into him, yeah.

BURBANK: Yeah, Secret Service, or their Der Secret Service...

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

BURBANK: I speak a little German.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

BURBANK: Behind him and bumped into him and I mean they are never going to let him forget that at Der Applebee's.

SAGAL: Yeah.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: On the plus side, that guy just got elected president of Greece. So apparently it worked out OK.
