Spicing Things Up

With the new year and resolutions, so many of us are trying to find ways to eat healthier.

The good news is that eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring or bland!

Instead, wake up your taste buds!

Cooking with herbs and spices enhances the flavor of healthy foods without adding fat, salt, sugar, or calories.

“Herbs and spices are a great way to add flavor to a dish,” explained Lee Seidel, who owns Flavor Mavens with Jennifer Stanek, when we spoke about using spices for healthy eating.

“It is important to get spices that are fresh. We actually get in our seeds in our shop and we hand-grind our seeds. That way your seasonings are fresh when you open the jar and they smell wonderful. You want to eat them and you want to use them every night.”

“At Flavor Mavens we only use organic herbs and spices for our complex blends.” For optimum flavor and health benefits, Lee recommends looking for blends that do not have any chemicals or anti-caking agents.

If you were to add one spice to your diet in the New Year, Lee recommends the anti-inflammatory powerhouse … turmeric. “Turmeric is beneficial for your over-all health.” “Turmeric is the key ingredient for our Take Curry & Don’t Worry seasoning blend.”

How to use this spice blend? “Just simmer and sauté your chicken thighs with a little Take Curry & Don’t Worry … it’s wonderful and so healthy.”

And an extra tip for a healthier new year … “One of the things I like to tell people is that you want your base, your seasoning, to have a healthy fat. And three of my favorite healthy fats are coconut oil, ghee, and olive oil.”

This is Jennifer Chandler with The Weekly Dish. Enjoy the flavor!
