Stephen Ash on his book - A Massacre in Memphis: The Race Riot that Shook the Nation One Year After the Civil War.

Host Jonathan Judaken speaks with Stephen V. Ash, author of A Massacre in Memphis: The Race Riot that Shook the Nation One Year After the Civil War. The Memphis Massacre took place 150 years ago this May.

On March 17, 2016 at 6 pm Stephen Ash will give a public lecture at Rhodes College based on his book, which is part of a semester long sequence of events across Memphis intending to commemorate this significant but little known episode in Memphis and American history. Ash provides the social context in two ways: first, by explaining Memphis history during the Civil War and how this impacted the political economy of the city just following the war and next by breaking down the groups who were living in Memphis in spring of 1866.

My mother introduced me to WKNO-FM and public radio long before I can remember. I suppose the first thing I really recall about WKNO-FM is that every afternoon, when my mother picked me up from school, the radio was tuned-in to The World, then All Things Considered, probably beginning around age 8. The way these reporters and hosts took you from the comfort of your mom's van to wherever in the world they were reporting from absolutely fascinated me. From then on, I was officially hooked.
