Vacation, all I ever wanted....

Vacation time gives you the opportunity to take a break in body, mind and spirit.

But, how many of us are truly taking a break on our vacations? By definition, vacation is a period of suspension from work, study, or other activity, usually used for rest, recreation or travel. However, according to the career site, Glass Door, 61% of employees admit to working on their vacation. With a plethora of emails and deadlines at work, it can seem counterproductive to disconnect from work to get some rest and relaxation.

If we do not take vacations and work breaks, it can be counterproductive to our lives.

According to Tony Schwartz, President and CEO of The Energy Product, "We cannot sustain a high level of performance over a long period of time without intervals of rest. If you are at work, you can take mini-rest periods by taking standing breaks, stepping outside, or doing simple desk exercises." Deep breathing exercises are a great way to recharge and reduce stress levels.

We need to give our minds the space it needs to refuel.

Most likely, your best ideas occur when you are not staring at your computer screen. By feeling relaxed and not burdened by the tasks of the day, our minds have a chance to wander. We can then hear our own thoughts. Allowing for this space gives our minds to be unburdened by tasks and able to think creatively.

When we do vacation, we really have the opportunity to get away from everyday tasks and this allows our minds see life from a different perspective. You may even find that it is more effective to helping you to engage at work.

Be wise and be well! This is Sheila Harrell of the Church Health Center.
