Memphis Moment: Howard's Row

Memphis, TN – Early in the Civil War, a massive fire on Main Street spread to an unsavory section of town called Howard's Row. The building, which was burning fiercely when help arrived, had formerly been the property of Isaac Bolton, who used it as a slave jail and market.

Memphis Moment: People's Grocery Store

Memphis, TN – Thomas Moss, a letter carrier in Memphis, saved enough money to go into partnership with two other black men, Calvin McDonald and Henry Steward, to open a store in the suburbs of Memphis. Black customers switched their business from a white man's grocery the street to Moss's new store, where service and prices were good. The outraged white storekeeper created a disturbance.
