What you may not know, however, is that his American hero was a native son of Tennessee, born in a log cabin in Pall Mall.</p><p>As a young man, York was a member of the Church of Christ. He initially declared himself a conscientious objector at the outbreak of World War I, but his petition was denied.&nbsp;<span style="line-height: 1.5;">The thirty-year old York found himself assigned to the </span>82nd<span style="line-height: 1.5;"> division on the Western Front. </span></p> Tue, 16 Jul 2013 23:13:45 +0000 Steve Pike 34059 at http://wknofm.org Sergeant Alvin Cullum York Elmwood Cemetery http://wknofm.org/post/elmwood-cemetery <p>Elmwood Cemetery, founded in 1852, is the oldest active cemetery in Memphis.&nbsp;<span style="line-height: 1.5;">Fifty citizens put up $500 each to purchase and develop a 40-acre parcel of land. Another 40 acres were added later.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5;">The name Elmwood was selected by a drawing from a list of proposed names.
