Most young stage performers yearn for leading roles and top billing on programs. But as a singer and dancer, Justin G. Nelson doesn't hesitate to check the "Ensemble" box on audition forms. This dedicated chorus member became one of the most prolific performers on local stages, and now he's on the road with a touring production of The Wizard of Oz, running at the OrpheumTheatre.
Nelson says he enjoys the range of challenges that come with ensemble work: the costume changes, the juicy dance routines, and the high-stepping production numbers. In The Wizard of Oz he portrays the Mayor of Munchkinland, a resident of the Emerald City and a Winkie Guard in the Wicked Witch's lair.
In 2013, the Memphis theater community bestowed upon Nelson its first ever "Gypsy Award," going to those hoofers and belters who bring professionalism and dedication to ensemble roles.
In September, Nelson will be back in Memphis, appearing in the ensemble for Mamma Mia! at Playhouse on the Square. But he's got his eye on Broadway, where he says he'd be perfectly happy in the chorus of Hamilton -- or any other show that appreciates the ensemble spirit he brings.
