Archivists or Activists? A Civil Rights Museum Responds to Recent Controversies

Terri Lee Freeman, the new director of the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, didn't expect a new chapter in the movement so soon on her watch. But the museum won't wait on the sidelines.

As isolated events, the recent shootings of unarmed black men by police officers might be seen as avoidable tragedies. But together, the names of Oscar Grant (in California), Michael Brown (Missouri) and Eric Garner (New York) among others, suggest chronic problems within American law enforcement.

In today's interview, Freeman says that this conversation isn't new, and that the NCRM has a responsibility to focus on "living history."

Reporting from the gates of Graceland to the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, Christopher has covered Memphis news, arts, culture and politics for more than 20 years in print and on the radio. He is currently WKNO's News Director and Senior Producer at the University of Memphis' Institute for Public Service Reporting.
