Finding Rest

Rest is good for our bodies.

It gives us a chance to heal and recharge. If you are at a place of unrest, it is time to take self-inventory. Are you experiencing stress or burnout? Stress can be expressed physically with increased heart rate and shallow breathing. Burnout is more emotionally based, leading to disengagement, hopelessness and feelings of detachment.

Here are some key questions to help you determine if you have unrest and what areas you may need to work on:

  • I don’t usually rush from one commitment to another.
  • I take care of myself as well as others.
  • I nourish myself with a well balanced diet.
  • My home and workspace are organized.
  • I feel positive most of the time.
  • I spend more time doing what I want than what I should.
  • I use my annual vacation time.
  •  I get adequate sleep.
  • I have at least one strong relationship with someone who supports me.
  • I don’t’ smoke, drink to excess, or have any other addictive behaviors.
  • I take at least 15 minutes daily to do something I enjoy.
  • I have a hobby.

If you answered NO to the majority of the questions, you may need to try the following:

  • Clear your schedule of unnecessary activities.
  • Schedule time for yourself.
  • Focus on ONE goal to work on.

Being stressed can be alleviated by periods of rest. If you are burned out, you may need to do some soul searching and creative problem solving. Seek training, mentoring or counseling to help redirect your course to line up with your values.
