The Floral Table

The Garden District

Next weekend is Art by Design.

In it’s second year, Art by Design is a unique, three-day event series to raise money for the arts in our city.  ArtsMemphis has brought together 13 of Memphis' most sought-after interior designers to create one-of-a-kind "vignettes" within a gallery showroom.  The events run next Thursday April 27 thru Saturday April 29 at Propcellar.

I turned to Greg Campbell, an owner at The Garden District and one of the designers participating in Art by Design, to share some tips on decorating the dining table for a dinner party.

Why have flowers? “It elevates the whole event to have fresh flowers on the table.”

I couldn’t agree more.  So how do us non-florists do it at home?

Greg’s first tip is one that is practical.

“One of the main things I think is important is to acquire the containers … a series of bottles, beakers, that you can put individual stems in down the table. So it’s easy. Just pick up the stems and you already have the container.”

And his suggestion on what to put in those containers might surprise you.

“I do like mixed arrangements but using one type of flower in multiple containers can really make a statement.”

And to keep your flowers looking their best the night of the party … and for days after:

“Whenever you bring fresh flowers home, always give the stems a fresh cut and put in clean water. Then after your dinner party, remember every two days to empty that water, recut the flowers, and put them in fresh water.”

Armed with these simple tips, I know your next dinner party table will be a knock-out!

This is Jennifer Chandler with The Weekly Dish. Bon Appetit!
