New Poll Predicts Landslide Victory for Cohen
By Candice Ludlow
Memphis, TN – Steve Cohen has a commanding lead over former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton, according to a poll released by WMCTV this week. Sixty-five percent of those polled say they'd vote for Cohen for Tennessee's 9th District congressional seat in the Democratic primary. Only 14.5 percent support Herenton, and 20 percent are undecided. If all of the undecided voters cast their ballots for Herenton, he'd still only garner 35 percent.
In the general election, the Shelby County Mayoral race is tight. Republican Mark Luttrell has a 5 percent lead over Democrat Joe Ford. But in June they were tied with 40 percent each.
Yacoubian Research sampled 557 likely voters July 13 and 14 throughout Memphis and Shelby County. The largest number of undecided voters in Whitehaven, which is Herenton's turf.
Early voting continues through Saturday, July 31 in the Democratic and Republican primaries, as well as the general election. Election Day is Thursday, August 5.
