Pick the Right Wine for Valentine's

“Where there is no wine, there is no love,” said Euripides, the ancient Greek playwright

It’s almost Valentine’s Day, and if Euripedes was right, it is important to have a proper wine picked for that special night.

A romantic red can help set the mood for a special occasion, especially on Valentine’s Day.

But picking the perfect “love at first sip” bottle can be daunting.

Michael Hughes, general manager and wine club coordinator at Joe’s Wines and Liquors, kindly offered us some advice on picking a wine that can help you and your sweetie celebrate your love.

“When picking a wine for Valentine’s Day think of elegance and sensuality.”

Pinot Noirs from Oregon … and the Willamette valley in particular … are his go-to choice.

“The reason why they are my go to region for pinot is that it is so elegant, the acidity is very high, and they are just really, really beautiful wines.”

“When picking a pinot noir from Willamette Valley looks for the 2012s. They should be coming to market now and they are outstanding.”

One of Michael’s favorites this year is pinot from Patricia Green Cellars.

“One of the main reasons why that is my favorite it is so elegant. They don’t do a lot in the vineyard; they really allow for the vineyard speak for itself.”

Coming up just after Valentine’s day is a unique opportunity to learn even more about wines from Oregon … which could also potentially be the perfect Valentine gift for that special someone.

“On Thursday February 19 from 4:30p.m. to 7:00p.m. at The University Club of Memphis, 20 of the best wineries of Willamette Valley will be joining is for a tasting of their best wines.”

Happy Valentine’s Day!
