The Shelby County School Board, sometimes referred to as the Unified School Board, has to decide what to do with schools and school buildings inside suburban municipalities where students from unincorporated Shelby County are already attending. In some cases, the municipalities are about to vote on their own school boards, and the decision to keep some of these schools within the Shelby County School system is a bit controversial.
