Steps for Life

Young children learn to walk one step at a time.

They are curious and ready to learn, and their inner determination to walk makes them fearless against inevitable falls. Their first steps are significant and very similar to the first steps we take when we recover from addiction. Recovery from an addiction starts with one important step: recognizing there is a problem.

Alcoholism is a chronic disease and can be potentially life-threatening without treatment. "Alcohol addiction will disrupt your life and destroy personal relationships." Women should not have more than 3 drinks at a time. Men should not have more than 4 drinks at a time.. (webmd)

You may need help quitting if you struggle with more than three of the following problems in one year:

  • Inability to quit drinking or control how much you drink
  • The need to drink more to get the same effect
  • Withdrawal symptoms occur when you stop drinking
  • Spending a lot of time drinking and recovering from drinking, or giving up other activities so you can drink
  • Trying to quit drinking or cutting back with little or no success
  • Continuing to drink even though it harms your relationships and causes physical problems

Learn about all possible resources for recovery. Some people are able to quit on their own with the support of Alcoholics Anonymous, while others need medical supervision or even hospitalization. Treatment facilities provide free screenings to help determine the level of care you need.
Relapse may be part of your journey, but the road to recovery is a trip you don't want to miss.
